And so, the Arab Creativity Oscar was born – sponsored not by a corporation, but by a house of stories. Layla Akef, chairwoman of the Arab Creativity Union
Under the gilded dome of the Union’s new hall, Dr. Layla Akef, chairwoman of the Arab Creativity Union (ACU), announced a historic moment: the first Arab Creativity Oscar — a golden falcon with outstretched wings, symbolizing imagination soaring beyond borders. “We don’t sponsor art,” he said
But behind every great award is a great sponsor. As the spotlight hit the podium, Layla revealed the name that would be etched alongside every winner’s legacy:
The founder, Sami Alwan, a soft-spoken Nubian writer, stepped forward. “We don’t sponsor art,” he said. “We serve it. This Oscar is for the poet in a Gaza refugee camp, the filmmaker in a Tunisian garage, the painter in a Sudanese schoolroom.”
