To be transgender is not the same as being gay or lesbian, yet our liberation is inextricably woven together. We are family—sometimes a dysfunctional one, but family nonetheless. In this post, I want to unpack the nuances of transgender inclusion in LGBTQ culture, the history that binds us, the friction points that often get glossed over, and why a rising tide must lift all boats. You cannot tell the story of modern LGBTQ rights without trans women of color. Period.
