Never format a drive that contains data you want to keep. Permissions are almost always reversible. Formatting is not.
Before you bang your fist on the desk or (worse) click "Format," take a deep breath. This is rarely a sign of a dead drive. In 9 out of 10 cases, it is a software permission issue, a simple ownership error, or a minor file system glitch. external hard drive access denied
If that slider is in the "Lock" or "Read Only" position, you cannot write or modify files, but you also cannot access them if the security logic is glitching.
