Yet modders argue they are no different from fan fiction writers or remix artists. “We’re not selling these mods,” says Arjun. “We share them on encrypted forums or private Discord servers. It’s a conversation. If Bollywood won’t take risks, we will.”
“Mainstream Bollywood is a product,” says Kavya. “Movies Mod is a playground. One particularly controversial sub-genre is “anti-Bollywood mods”—where modders remove the masala elements entirely. A famous example is Gunday: No Mercy , a fan-edit that removes all comic relief and songs from the 2014 action film, leaving only 52 minutes of raw violence and betrayal. “It became a gritty crime drama,” says a fan who downloaded it. “Better than most Netflix originals.” Of course, Movies Mod exists in a legal grey zone. Bollywood studios, led by the Producers Guild of India, have begun issuing takedown notices for modded versions on YouTube and Reddit. In 2024, Dharma Productions successfully removed a fan-cut of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani that reframed the film as a tragedy about class divide.
