She searched everywhere. Under the bed, in her closet, even in the bathroom cabinet. Nothing. Sable sat on the windowsill, licking one paw, watching Ellie tear the room apart with an expression of mild curiosity.
Ellie opened her mouth to say no, she stole it, she’s been hiding it for days , but the words wouldn’t come. Because Sable was looking at her over their mother’s shoulder, and those apricot eyes were glittering with something that looked an awful lot like triumph.
It happened on a drizzly Tuesday in Accumula Town. Ellie was walking home from school, her backpack soggy and her mood even soggier, when she heard a tiny, pitiful mew from behind a dumpster behind the Pokémon Center. Sable’s tail flicked once, which Ellie decided to take as agreement. They never became a traditional trainer-Pokémon pair. Sable never stopped stealing shiny objects (though she eventually developed a habit of returning them—usually after Ellie promised her a berry as a reward). She never obeyed commands instantly or fought with the kind of disciplined precision that Ellie’s classmates bragged about. She searched everywhere
