As he listened to track after track, Alex felt like he was getting a glimpse into a parallel universe, one where the Beatles had taken a different creative path. There were songs with jangly guitars, songs with frenetic drumbeats, and even a few that seemed to blend folk and rock in ways that would have been impossible on their official albums.
Alex hesitated, but his desire for the music won out. He handed over a wad of cash, and Vinnie handed him a scratched and worn cassette tape.
That night, Alex settled into his bedroom, popped the tape into his boombox, and hit play. The hiss and crackle of the tape filled the air, and then, suddenly, the music began.
