Did you install ESXi on a standard gaming PC? Your Realtek or certain Intel 2.5GbE NICs will not work out of the box. You need the "Community Networking Driver for ESXi" (fling). Download the VIB file and install it via SSH. Without this, your network card will look like a ghost. The Verdict: Is it worth the headache? Yes.
