Biting into a strawberry in the dead of winter can be a disappointing experience. The berry might look beautiful—bright red and perfectly shaped—but one taste reveals a watery, hard, and sometimes sour interior. Why is there such a dramatic difference between a strawberry in January and one in June?
The answer lies in the season. While modern agriculture allows us to enjoy strawberries year-round, there is only one true season when they reach their peak of flavor, texture, and nutrition: , typically from April through June in most of the Northern Hemisphere.
If you must have strawberries in winter, treat them as a different ingredient entirely: cook them, sweeten them, or blend them. But to experience a true strawberry, mark your calendar for the first warm days of spring. Your taste buds will thank you.
